Jane Langley
Contemporary Realist
I am a contemporary realist oil painter and I enjoy working in a studio. The quiet setting enables me to ponder and focus on a project at hand. I put forth all my energy and emotions into a work of art. I study my subject matter, observing, concentrating and observing.
Creating “The Corner Cafe”
A great deal of my work represents my own experiences, places I have been to, photos I have snapped. I reflect on those moments when I plan a composition, deciding what I want to share with my audience. I am methodical in my approach, and when painting I become absorbed with following line, shape, and form. Loving the challenge of capturing the details.
Art History Study
I acquired my artistic knowledge by attending workshops, mentoring, and personal study.
A defining moment in my artistic approach happened when I was reading about 12th Century Cistercian Monks and the stained glass art they created. I felt an instant connection, for a relative was working at a present day Cistercian Monastery. Ages ago, this religious order prohibited the use of color in art, for it was considered the "forbidden fruit." Brown was the preferred color.
Old Masters utilized brown, as the French termed “en brunaille,” in underpaintings which improved the accuracy of their painting. As I practiced this technique I was stunned by its dramatic effect!

The Connection to My Life
Concurrently, I was working at Greenvale Vineyards in RI, and I thought about the correlation of the Monks of long ago to Vintners of today. Their disciplined lifestyle of manual labor and working in agriculture and the correlation of brown to the earth and farming. My focus on value painting caused me to reflect on my own fundamental beliefs and how it related to my life and my work. It also gave me solace and clarity during a poignant time in my life.

Jane Langley
I am a native New Englander from Northshore Boston, who currently resides in the Florida Space Coast region. I am always inspired to paint New England scenes, for it was where I was born and raised. I love the splendor of the coastal communities and the local farms. My favorite pastime when visiting is eating the “wicked good food” at farm stands, seafood shacks and ice cream shops.
As a newer resident of Florida my mind is flowing with fresh ideas to put on canvas.
I am sharing my art with you and hope it enriches your life.
